Cultural Inheritance and Regional Social Development

Relying on three local disciplines of Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and The Science of Law, Cultural Inheritance and Regional Social Development was recognized as the second-phase provincial superior discipline in the project of advantageous disciplines development in May, 2014. At present, five research directions came into being: classic interpretation and inheritance research, literary theory and regional refined culture research, traditional and regional culture innovation research, Huaiyang historical and cultural heritage research as well as legal culture and regional law development research. The three local advantageous disciplines mentioned represent the highest level of discipline development and exert the greatest potential in Yangzhou University. Historically, Professor Ren Zhongmin established the first batch of doctoral program under the state council, with Tan Fochu, Qi Longwei, Gu Huangchu and Zeng Huapeng being the academic authorities in their fields. Among the present 50 professors, 27 are Ph.D. supervisors, 3 the committee members of MOE, anther 3 anonymous editors for Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In addition, many other professors such as Prof. Yao Wenfang, Prof. Xia Jinwen and Prof. Qian Zongwu have been honored as top experts, teaching masters, contributors of outstanding achievement, etc.

Long-term academic accumulation has laid a solid foundation for the scientific research of the discipline. In recent years, the discipline has actively focused on national and local strategic needs and strengthened interdisciplinary integration. As a result, this discipline has undertaken 20 national social science fund projects, including one major and three key projects. A series of top-level research findings are yielded, including Research on Chinese scroll by Prof. Che Xilun, Judicial Reform in Contemporary China: Achievements, Problems and Solutions by Prof. Xia Jinwen, An Introduction to Esthetic Culture by Prof. Yao Wenfang, etc.

The main discipline features of Cultural Inheritance and Regional Social Development are listed below.

The discipline promotes academic development based on national strategic demands and local needs. Guided by discipline construction and local context, it achieved interdisciplinary integration by referring to 211 project and interdisciplinary platform construction. In recent years, centering on the construction of excellent traditional culture and harmonious society, this discipline has undertaken two 211-standard projects: Yangtai Culture and Regional Development (2007-2010) and Humanities Heritage and Regional Social Development (2010-2013). The year 2011 witnessed the establishment of the “Huaiyang Cultural Research Center”, a research base of philosophy and social sciences in Jiangsu Province. In 2013, another doctoral program titled Chinese Legal Culture and Rule of Law Development was authorized by state council. Therefore, the disciplinary construction is closely integrated with national development strategies and the needs of regional social development.

The discipline builds up a cultural inheritance research pattern of “combination of elegance and vulgarity” and “topping the earth”. The discipline includes poetry studies, Shangshu studies, the Analects of Confucius, aesthetics, and literary studies, etc., contributing to the study of national cultural strategies of "elegant" culture research, such as the national major bidding project "literature integration and research of Shangshu"(2012) and the first prize of the outstanding achievements in the province's philosophy and social sciences, "Introduction to Aesthetics and Culture" (2012). There are also "popular" cultural studies, such as treasure scrolls, commentaries and morality, which combines local social development close to folk life. For instance, China Treasure Scroll Research (2013) got the first prize for outstanding achievements in philosophy and Social Sciences awarded by the Ministry of Education. A large number of scholars have focused on the compilation, excavation and research of Yangzhou cultural historical materials, as well as the research on the extraterritorial spreading of Yangzhou culture. They have published the Bao Ying Liu's Collection and Jiao Xun's Collection of Poems, etc. Relevant historical materials of important historical figures such as Cui Zhiyuan and Marco Polo have formed a number of influential research results. This discipline has become the research base of studying Huaiyang culture both at home and abroad.

As well as these, the discipline pioneered a practical path to serve regional social development with traditional culture. Firstly, this discipline strengthens the cross-integration of traditional culture and social development research. By combing the historical laws and evolutionary trajectories of legal culture changes and the development of the rule of law, it sorts out and explores the positive factors in Chinese traditional legal culture and its positive influence on the development of the rule of law in contemporary China so as to provide theoretical support and institutional design for the construction of a socialist country ruled by law. Furthermore, it actively enhances the discipline capacity to serve local social development. For example, the National Qing Dynasty History Project The Imperial Archives of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty (18 volumes, first prize of excellent ancient books in China, 2010). It was completed in eight years, interviewed famous handicraft inheritors of Yangzhou Qingqu, Yangzhou jade and lacquerware by means of modern oral history. The project has important historical value for regional cultural heritage and social development; Completed on the basis of long-term theoretical research and rich practical research, the Urban Management Law (proposed draft) has aroused great concern from the Two Sessions in 2014 and were proposed to be included in the proposal.

Another important feature is that the discipline successfully explored a talent cultivation mode that combines cultural education with moral integrity and ability. The discipline upholds the concept of cultural education, persists in teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, and opens up a diversified school-running tradition. Assimilating merits from ancient and modern culture, Chinese and Western culture, it respects the development of individuality, broadens the academic horizon, improves the comprehensive quality of students. A large number of outstanding talents with different degrees in various fields have been trained, such as senior middle school Chinese teachers represented by Hong Zongli, the winners of Lu Xun Literature Prize such as Bi Feiyu, Wu Yiqin and Wang Gan, the famous scholars such as Wang Hui, Gao Jianping and Ding Fan, the leading cadres such as Yang Xiaotang and Fu Hua and famous entrepreneurs such as Fan Baofu and Liu Jianhua.
